A rare "408" armchair designed by Gio Ponti for ISA and produced in the 1950's. The fabric is a cotton velvet, and the legs are turned walnut, although painted. The high backrest provides exceptional comfort and luxury.

ISA of Bergamo produced a series of extraordinary Ponti designs in the late 1940's and early 1950's.

Giovanni Ponti is often described as the father of 20th century Italian modernism and simplicity. He was a prolific architect, industrial designer, furniture designer, artist, teacher, writer, and publisher. He enthusiastically promoted an Italian-style art of living through media like Domus magazine, which he founded in 1928 and directed almost all his life.

He trained several generations of designers through the Milan Polytechnic School, and contributed to the creation of one of the most important design awards, the Compasso d'Oro prize.
